What They Say

Alastair Sawday's Special Places To Stay

"A small, eclectic bolt hole, this 1651 mill house on the northern border of the lakes has a stream racing past that is fed by fells that rise behind. Richard and Eleanor belong to that band of innkeepers who do their own thing instinctively and immaculately - this is the very antithesis of a big impersonal hotel. Richard comes out to greet you at the car, to help with the bags, to show you up to your room, and finally, invites you down for drinks 'whenever you're ready'. Downstairs you'll find a tiny library and a homely sitting room with rocking chair, ancient stone fireplace, wood carvings and piles of reference books on every subject under the sun. All the while Eleanor has been cooking up five courses of heaven for your supper, all home-made (and organic where possible), from the olive bread to the watercress soup; breakfasts, too, are first class. Bedrooms range in size, but not style. The old mill, wrapped in clematis montana, has its own sitting room, and you can fall asleep here to the sound of the river. In the main house, beams, bowls of fruit, African art, fresh flowers and good linen."

American Independent Innkeepers Association:

"The Mill is a charming traditional mountain hotel by a stream where most people return again and again."

Vogue:

"This fellside hotel has gained modern attributes without losing its 17th Century character. The food is imaginative and full of flavour and honest goodness."

Country Living:

"In a village where the Glenderamackin rushes down from the fells around Saddleback stands The Mill Hotel, home of Richard and Eleanor Quinlan who welcome their guests with genuine warmth."

Weekend Telegraph:

"Delicious steamed pud and a roaring log fire, who could ask for more."

Sunday Observer:

"Voted one of Europe's top 50 small hotels."

Staying Off the Beaten Track:

Readers Comments:

"Beautiful, quiet, food is superb, service attentive and friendly, Outstanding, interesting dinner with Mozart background, charming, hospitality exceptional, food absolutely delicious."

AA. Guide:

Rosette For Good Food (5 years):

"The Mill with its wealth of antiques, paintings and period pieces is a retreat of great character and much more than a restaurant with rooms."

The Good Hotel Guide (15 years):

Cesar Ritz Award Winner:

"This special award is given annually to only 10 hotels in the British Isles in recognition of the dedication of the owners and their contribution to innkeeping. Each of these 10 hotels is considered to be outstanding on its own class."
